Poker Lingo

  • Bad Beat – When someone is a strong favourite to win the hand and they lose.
  • Button – The dealer…person to the right of the small blind. Last person to act on flop, turn, river.
  • Cut-off – Person to the right of the button.
  • Donk/fish – Beginner… someone who doesn’t play poker very well.
  • Drawing Dead – When someone is on a draw for example if they are chasing a straight or a flush, but even if they get the card/s they want, there is no way they can win the hand as their opponent has a stronger hand.
  • Gutshot – Also called an inside straight draw. The player needs, for example, an eight only to complete a straight.
  • Heads up(HU) – When there are only two players competing against each other in the hand. One on one.
  • Hole Cards – Cards dealt to each player that only they can look at, until the hand is over.
  • Kicker – When at least two players have the same pair, their unused, second card, or kicker, determines the winner.
  • Nuts – The best hand possible
  • Overpair – A pocket pair dealt to a player that is higher than the cards on the board.
  • Pocket Pair – Two hole cards of the same rank dealt to the player.
  • Pot Odds – The amount of money in the pot compared to the amount you must put in the pot to continue playing.
  • Rainbow – The cards dealt on the flop are of different suits
  • Runner – The term ‘runner-runner’ is commonly used to describe when a player hits the turn and river to beat their opponents strong hand held on the flop.
  • Tilt – When the emotions get the better of a player and they play in a reckless and loose manner.
  • Trips – Three of a kind.
  • Under the Gun – The player who is in the position to act first. Pre-flop this is the player to the left of the big blind, though betting rounds after this one it is the player to the left of the button.

Eldest Hand – The player immediately to the dealers left or the one is dealt to first.
