Gaining The Advantage In Poker
Poker is a game that depends on skill just as much as it does on pure blind luck, but not the kind of luck you’ll see with online casinos and those games. In many cases, playing poker effectively is not so much about what cards you actually have, but what cards the other players in the game may think you have in your hand. Predictability is a quality that may be beneficial to you in other areas of your life, but this is certainly not the case with poker! Playing poker effectively so often requires the ability to keep your opponents off guard and in the dark about your next move as much as possible.
Keep in mind that keeping your opponents guessing does not necessarily equate to bluffing your way through each and every hand that you are dealt. In fact, bluffing too often may actually cause other players to call you on them when they realize that you bluff regularly. You would be better served by developing the ability to determine how your hands rank in comparison to the other players’ hands, or by figuring out what chances are of getting the cards that you want.
Of course there is no denying that luck does play a large part in poker. You can however help your luck along by careful observation of the other players’ previous moves and what cards they have given up. Not only will this clue you in on what cards are left in the deck, this will also help you predict what the other players will be doing to some extent.
No article on playing poker to your advantage would be complete without a mention of “tells”. Tells are simply verbal cues that poker players give out, whether they are aware of it or not. Many players simply cannot help give the other players around the table a hint of what cards they have in their hand or what moves they are planning next with subtle–and sometimes not so subtle–signs such as nervousness, twitching or some other involuntary action. If you want to gain the upper hand in poker, you will simply have to learn how to play the game without giving away any of your secrets, which is where the term “poker face” comes from.
Interestingly enough, tells can also work to your advantage if you are cunning enough to use them to mislead your opponents. A few well placed, misleading cues can be enough to throw your opponents off guard and make them think that you have a stronger or weaker hand than you actually do. Of course you should be careful not to overdo it, as badly placed erroneous tells are just as damaging as poor bluffing strategy. If you think that your acting skills are less than award winning, you may want to avoid this technique altogether!
You should also develop the ability to pick up tells that the other players are giving out. Keep in mind however that some players may be giving out false tells for you to pick up on as well.
