Effective Poker Playing Strategies

Poker is a game that can take long years of experience to master. As many beginning poker players have already realized, there is no shortcut to being able to play the game like an expert. It is something that simply does not come overnight.

While there is “magic formula” or clear cut guide that can make you win the big pot every single time you play, there are quite a few strategies that you can implement that will greatly increase your chances of winning, some of which we offer below.

Don’t play every hand that you are dealt

It is always tempting to throw out every single hand that you feel will give you a good chance of winning. Playing this way can actually work to your disadvantage. Many novice poker players play as many of the hands that they are dealt as possible, when folding would actually be better. Far too often, the temptation to make a bid for the pot is simply too great to resist. It is important to realize that playing many hands will not necessarily result in increased chances of winning. You may in fact be giving up cards that will make better hands and therefore serve you better further on down the line. If you constantly find yourself playing more than 50% of the hands that you are dealt, a rethink of your poker playing strategy may be in order.

Save the festivities for after the game

Anyone who has ever sat down at a poker table has probably encountered more than a few players who cannot seem to separate playing from partying. Drinking and poker is something that has traditionally come hand in hand but there is really no reason for that. In fact, playing while you have had a few drinks can greatly affect how well you are able to play the game. It is common knowledge that alcohol can affect your judgment significantly and it is no different when you are playing poker. While we are not saying that you should avoid alcohol altogether when you are playing poker, it may be a good idea to keep things under control if you hope to have a chance of winning.

Use bluffing to your advantage

Effective bluffing is an art that sadly escapes the discernment of many novice players. Bluffing is not a technique that you can simply pull out any time you want in the hopes of having strong players fold before you. In fact, bluffing consistently–and getting caught in a bluff–will likely have a detrimental effect on your playing in the long run. You certainly do not want to build a reputation as a poker player who bluffs indiscriminately. Selective bluffing will serve you far better, in that it will keep players from guessing your motives with any degree of consistency.

Learn which hands you should hold onto and which ones to let go of

Holding on to a certain hand that you feel you are committed is a strategy that does not usually work out for the best. Experienced poker players will know when they are faced with a lost cause and will know how to act accordingly.
